The small Balkan state of Northern Macedonia is a land with an ancient history. Here lived strong people, brave warriors and skilled urban planners. Today it is a small, peaceful, mountainous country with amazing landscapes, colourful cities, ancient fortresses, and all of this is in abundance. Acquaintance with the country usually begins in Skopje. Houses with tiled roofs, cobbled streets, green courtyards, the aromas of coffee and fresh pastries make the capital cosy and tranquil. There are many architectural buildings from ancient times, among which the Skopsko Kale fortress, the stone bridge over the river Warder and Skopski aqueduct are especially notable. You also must visit the Millennium Cross, there is an excellent panorama of Skopje and the surrounding area from the observation deck.

The most impressive city in Northern Macedonia is Ohrid, which attracts with thickets of the forest, endless meadows and pristine ponds. Due to the 365 Orthodox churches, Ohrid is sometimes called "Slavic Jerusalem." However, the most important attraction is the amazing Ohrid Lake, which was formed 5 million years ago. It offers equipped beaches, comfortable hotels, recreation and entertainment areas. You can rent a boat or yacht, and go on an unusual journey through the vast expanses of water, or just go fishing. Northern Macedonia has 3 national parks and 33 nature reserves. Majestic mountains, clear lakes, fast rivers, pine forests, green valleys and rich wildlife are striking in their unspoiled beauty. They preserved many cultural and historical values: villages with stone houses, churches, monasteries and much more. The stone town of Kuklica and the canyon Matka deserve special attention.

The excellent geographical position and unique relief captivate many fans of mountain and hiking, rafting and speleology. Macedonia will delight lovers of skiing and snowboarding with its beautiful ski resorts. The famous resort of Macedonia Mavrovo is notable not only for its beautiful ski and climbing routes but also for charming hotels built in the traditional style of the country. Recently, Macedonia has become increasingly attractive for foreign investment. The most successful for this are winemaking and viticulture. Large investments can also be made in the development of mineral deposits in the territory of Macedonia, but most of them choose the tourism business, which is becoming more profitable here every year. Business tourism in Northern Macedonia is becoming increasingly popular, specialized hotels and companies for organizing events of any scale and direction have already appeared.

Business Information

The economy of Northern Macedonia can be called actively developing. According to the Doing Business world ranking in 2019, this small but proud country took the 10th place, which already says a lot. The government is making a lot to reduce the tax burden and duties in order to attract more foreign investment. Among the obvious advantages, there are free access to the European market, convenient access to transport corridors, a “green” customs corridor for the import of goods into the EU. And this despite the fact that the price tag for all associated costs will be more than moderate.

Currently, there are 4 free economic zones in the country, where it is possible to produce goods and services that are intended for export, as well as carry out wholesale trade. For foreign investors, free economic zones provide many advantages. For example, the sale and exchange of goods between such zones are not subject to a duty or an additional tax. Foreign companies located outside the free economic zones, which have no debts and are not bankrupt, can apply for benefits, a subvention of up to 500,000 euros for construction costs and other additional incentives.

Any person can be the owner and director of a Macedonian company, regardless of nationality. For registration you need just copies of the founders' passports and utility bills; personal presence is not necessary. In order to register a company, it is necessary to contribute an authorized capital of at least 5,000 euros, translate and notarize all the necessary documents, submit 3 name options for approval, indicate the scope of activity and state the structure of shareholders. In general, verification and registration of the company takes several business days.

Northern Macedonia has a flexible tax system. Basic taxes: income tax - 10%, dividend tax - 10%, VAT - 18%. This is quite low rates for Europe, which favourably affects the development of small and medium-sized businesses. A reduced VAT rate is provided for some areas of activity. And investments that are made in the modernization of enterprises are completely exempt from taxes. Today there is a state program to support entrepreneurs, who create jobs for the local population. The inhabitants of Northern Macedonia are famous for their love to work, sociable and friendly people. Traditionally, the working day begins early and ends at 4 o’clock; the Macedonians prefer to spend the evening with their families.

In Northern Macedonia, mining of ore and non-metallic minerals has been established, the tobacco, wine, textile and chemical industries are developed, there is ferrous metallurgy and mechanical engineering. Agriculture occupies a special place: the cultivation of grain and industrial crops, fruits and vegetables, and various livestock breeding. The main income to the treasury comes from the service sector, including tourism. Any of these areas is potentially promising and requires investment.
